Summer subjects
- Students may choose to enrol in subjects over the summer semester.
- In any academic year the summer semester is listed as the first semester of the calendar year (e.g. summer semester 2010 precedes semester 1, 2010).
- Summer semester is a non-standard semester in terms of class dates and timetabling.
- To find a complete list of summer subjects available, use the Advanced Search facility on the Handbook.
- Use the drop down menu to enter "Summer Semester"
- Levels: "All levels"
- Under Course or subject: select "Subjects"
- Under Study Level: select "Undergraduate (first degree)"
- Refine search using the various study areas listed (Science-credit subjects for BSc students appear below.)
- Click the "Search" button
Selection
- Subject selection for summer semester occurs at the same time as subject selection for semester 1 and 2 of that year.
- As with any subjects included for semester 1 or semester 2, all summer subjects must comply with a student's course structure and requirements.
- Due to field trips and the intensive delivery of some science summer subjects, students may not be able to enrol:
- after the date of commencement of these subjects
- in summer subjects which have clashing or overlapping timetables
- Students who would like to enrol in subjects outside the Faculty of Science should check availabilities in the Handbook and enquiries about application and enrolment procedures with the relevant Faculty or Student Centre.
- Please note that several summer semester subjects may also be available through the University of Melbourne Community Access Program (CAP). This may be an option for students where it is not appropriate for the subject to be added through their course enrolment.
Overloading
- An enrolment of more than 25 points in summer semester is considered an overload.
- Students need to seek approval to overload by emailing This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it to nominate summer subjects.
- Students are advised to read more about workload, which includes information about overloading.
Cancelling enrolment in a summer subject
- Students need to check that the last date to withdraw without incurring a fail result has not yet passed; and
- notify the Science Student Centre in writing. Appropriate action will be determined based upon when this written notification was received by the Science Student Centre.
It is not sufficient to advise only the subject coordinator or the teaching department. Do not assume that such notification will be passed onto the Science Student Centre.
Critical dates
- Most subjects are taught in an intensive mode spanning a few weeks or even days. The critical dates for students withdrawing from summer subjects without penalty depends on the individual subject chosen.
- Unlike subjects taught in semesters 1 or 2, different critical dates may apply to each summer subject.
- Students need to be aware of the last dates to withdraw for each of the summer subjects in which they are enrolled. The date that a student withdraws from a subject may have a financial impact. For more information, visit:
