Quota-restricted subjects
Several subjects offered by the Faculty of Science and Faculty of Medicine, Dental and Health Sciences are termed 'quota subjects' or 'quota restricted subjects'. These are usually laboratory or fieldwork subjects where the capacity for large enrolment is limited by available resources such as laboratory space.
A quota restriction will apply to that subject when the demand for these subjects exceeds the supply of places available.

Applying for a quota subject
IMPORTANT NOTE: Adding a quota subject through the Student Portal DOES NOT guarantee a place. Email notification will be sent to advise the outcome of your application.
- December 09 Quota round: Students apply via Student Portal during the re-enrolment period (Monday 26 October – Friday 04 December 2009).
- February, July and October Quota rounds: Students who did not apply for a quota restricted subjects in December (via the Student Portal) may apply for a place in these quota restricted subjects using Science Quota. A Melbourne University email username (student) and password is required to access the system.
- Students are automatically considered for a place in February, July and October quota rounds and therefore do not need to reapply if they:
- Have previously applied for a quota subject (Student Portal or Science Quota); and
- Have completed the pre-requisites; and
- Were unsuccessful in obtaining a place in an earlier quota round.
- Students will be advised by email of the outcome of their application for a quota subject.
- If students are successful in obtaining a place, the quota subject will be added to their enrolment within five working days of the relevant deadline. Students may need to amend their subject selection (i.e. remove another subject) to accommodate the quota subject within their enrolment.
- Students who are unsuccessful may need to go to their relevant student centre for course planning advice (Science and Biomedical Science students go to Science Student centre, Biomedicine students go to MDHS student centre).
Viewing the status of an application
- Students may view the status of their application online using Science Quota.
- Changes such as deleting an application or applying for another quota-restricted subject can also be made online.
