Classes from other faculties

Students may like to complement their science studies with classes from other areas of study. The links below will take you to pages specifically developed for Study Abroad and Exchange students. In cases where specific study abroad and exchange pages do not exist you will be taken to the faculty home page.

Class assessments

In Science, most subjects (classes) are assessed using tests and examinations. Examinations are usually held at the end of semester. This can be confusing to students who are used to continuous assessment. Laboratory work is often assessed on a more continuous basis, and some subjects may be assessed through papers, essays or assignments requiring considerable effort and showing evidence of research and original thought. A description of the assessment for individual subjects is available in the Course & Subject Handbook.

The University of Melbourne may have fewer contact hours than a student's home institution. A student may need to spend more hours studying outside class contact time than at home.

The Faculty Global Mobility Officer will explain this in more detail during the orientation period. Advice will also be provided about the amount of study time required and the academic support services available at the University.

How to cope with different assessment procedures

With less frequent assignments that carry a greater percentage towards the final grade, students should be aware of the specific procedures for each subject. Throughout the semester, classes are held to help students understand the expectations of the university, writing in Australia, in particular, the different focus on argumentation and critical analysis. Students may come across this not only in assignments, but also in writing exam papers.
