Tell us a bit about your experience overseas

During Semester 2, 2006, I had the wonderful burden of being a representative of the University of Melbourne at Lund University, Sweden. Those 7 months would arguably be the best experience both socially and academically. I had the opportunity to create invaluable friendships with other international students, network with both peers and seniors in my field of expertise, and additionally become exposed to an alternative approach to studies.

How would you compare the teaching and learning experience at Lund University to Melbourne University?

Personally I achieved a great deal from this exchange by undertaking masters subjects in a field not yet well established at Melbourne University, and I came back with knowledge that will hopefully allow me to stand out from other students.

Within the bioinformatics field I feel they are centuries ahead of most universities in Australia.I had a chance to do an applied work project, which allowed me to work on a project within the industry, which was a great experience.

Compared to studying at the University of Melbourne, I found Lund University demands a more self-reliant student. The students are left to study in their preferred style.

What advice do you have for other students?

My advice to fellow students is: don’t hold back - exchange, and in particular Lund University, is an experience like no other. I believe it has the highest intake of exchange students throughout Scandinavia. Especially enjoy the first month, prior to classes - it’s a lifetime experience!!
