Advanced standing/credit
Students who have completed previous study at tertiary level may be eligible to receive advanced standing (credit points) towards a Science degree. Advanced standing is assessed in accordance with the University of Melbourne Advanced Standing Policy.
Students who have completed previous study outside the University of Melbourne are required to complete an Advanced Standing application form (PDF) for each subject they wish to be considered for advanced standing.
Students who have previously completed study at the University of Melbourne are not required to complete the application form - details of possible advanced standing will be available to these students during enrolment.
New students will be provided with information about advanced standing during the enrolment period.
Credit under the Melbourne Model
In 2008 the University of Melbourne introduced educational reforms known as the Melbourne Model. A new suite of degrees, called 'New Generation' degrees were offered for the first time. Some pre-2008 degrees will continue to be offered for a period of time, whilst others will be offered in 'teach out' mode only. During this transition period, not all year levels of all courses will be available for entry.
Last intake into the Bachelor of Science, the Bachelor of Information Systems and the Bachelor of Optometry
- Bachelor of Science - Semester 2, 2009
- Bachelor of Information Systems - Semester 1, 2009
- Bachelor of Optometry - Semester 1, 2009
Students applying to enrol who have completed prior study should note that the award of advanced standing (credit) will be conditional upon the availability of later year entry. The Advanced Standing Co-ordinator can provide prospective students with information about advanced standing during this transition period.

International credit articulation agreements
The Faculty of Science has agreements with partner institutions in Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong, which recognises and awards advanced standing for specific Science and IT programs. For students completing these programs in their home countries, this provides for articulation to later years of either the Bachelor of Science, the Bachelor of Information Systems or the Bachelor of Optometry, enabling them to complete an undergraduate degree at the University of Melbourne in 1 to 2.5 years.
The amount of credit points a student receives as advanced standing in the Bachelor of Science will depend on the major the student chooses to pursue and the Diploma completed.
If a program/institution is not listed below, a student may still be eligible to apply for credit. A detailed syllabus of the program undertaken must be attached to an application.
- Singapore Polytechnic
- Temasek Polytechnic
- Ngee Ann Polytechnic
- Nanyang Polytechnic
- Republic Polytechnic
