Final subject assessment
Final subject assessment is a form of further assessment. Students in the following circumstances will be eligible to undertake final subject assessment:
- Are in their final year of enrolment, AND
- Have failed a single subject (worth up to twenty-five points) with a result of 40 -49.
Guidelines
- Students enrolled in Faculty of Science courses do not apply for final subject assessment.
- Eligible students are identified by the Science Student Centre according to specific criteria.
- Request for final subject assessment are made to the relevant teaching department by the Science Student Centre on behalf of the student.
- Final approval on the granting of final subject assessment to eligible students rests with the teaching department.
- Final subject assessment will normally be in the form of a formally supervised written examination or equivalent written assignment.
- Final subject assessment are marked to a maximum result of 50% and constitute 100% of the overall assessment in the subject.
Note: Final subject assessment may only be requested for a subject attempted within 12 months of the course completion date.
For final subject assessment, students may be required to perform additional assessment at any time prior to the release of final results, during an additional assessment period immediately following the release of final results, or during a defined supplementary examination period. Students should make themselves available at short notice until the end of the additional assessment period to accommodate any of these three possible time periods.
If a student is eligible:
- A 'S' will appear beside the original grade on the student's online results;
- The Science Student Centre or department may also contact the student.
Actions required
It is a student's responsibility to confirm arrangements with the teaching department to undertake the Final subject assessment.
Re-assessment
Re-assessment is a form of further assessment which allows course progression.
In general, a student may only be offered a second attempt at passing a subject IF a borderline failure (such as achieving a mark of 45% or more) in a single subject (other than a research project or thesis) has a significant impact on the student's progression through the course.
Circumstances which may lead to re-assessment being offered include the following:
- The course is a fixed, full-time course and failure in one subject would result in the student's progress to the next level of the course being delayed a year;
- The subject is a compulsory subject, offered only once a year, and a key prerequisite for the 'next' year of study in the student's course;
- The subject is a year-long subject.
Additional assessment of the type indicated above is normally offered as a supplementary exam, but its form would be determined by the Examination Board for the subject.
Students enrolled in Faculty of Science courses do not apply for re-assessment.
Re-assessment following a borderline failure in a subject may only be awarded a maximum of 50%.
