How to apply

  1. Read the 'Before applying' information on this page.
  2. Contact the Science Student Centre to discuss options.
  3. Apply in writing or complete a discontinuation form (available at the Science Student Centre):
    • Students need to clearly state their intention to cancel their enrolment in their course on the application form.
    • Students must make it clear whether they are discontinuing from their whole course or only one component.
    • If a student is studying a combined degree: If a student wishes to discontinue one component of a double degree the other faculty needs to be contacted to seek advice about how to apply for and enrol in the single degree. Students should also ask about getting credit for subjects taken in the other, discontinued degree.

Note: A student needs to reapply and undergo competitive re-assessment to resume studies in future. Not all courses will have a new intake as courses are being phased out over the next few years.

Before applying

A student should consider the following information before discontinuing a course:

Leave of Absence (LOA)

Course load

A student can reduce their current course load to better suit current commitments. A course load can be changed by making subject changes. Students need to be aware of the course load requirements relevant to their student status:

Fees and academic record

The request will have an impact on any subjects the student is currently undertaking or had planned to undertake. The date that the applications are submitted to the faculty determines whether:

  1. the student is financially liable for a subject – a student is liable if enrolled in a subject on the subject census date. See: Course and subject change dates.
  2. subjects will be deleted, withdrawn (WD), or a fail (N) result will be recorded on the student’s academic transcript.
